The main spool of the pilot relief valve is subject to oil pressure at both ends, and the main valve spring only has a small stiffness. When the overflow flow changes and the spring compression changes, the pressure of the oil inlet changes little, so the performance of the pilot relief valve under constant pressure is better than that of the direct acting relief valve.

Direct acting relief valve can only be used for low pressure and small flow conditions, because the control of higher pressure or larger flow, the need for a large stiffness of the hard spring, not only manual adjustment is difficult, and the valve opening slightly changes, it will cause greater pressure fluctuations.
